Let me be up front and give you the simple answer, no. It is not too late to start a YouTube channel, and if you are considering starting one now, I suggest you stop reading this blog post and go right ahead and start one!
And for those who are looking for a little bit more flesh to my answer, keep on reading!
Building software and functionality is a fundamental part of my day job. And a big part of that job is trying to decide what we should or shouldn’t build, working out if what we want to build as value and creating projections. Investing the time and energy into building something can be costly, and so before we make a commitment to build it we do as much research as possible up front.
So let’s try and do the same thing here before we all agree to run off and invest hundreds of hours churning out YouTube videos.
Let’s look a the stats…
Some general stats first. The world population consists of 8 billion people (all stats are accurate at the time of this post). Out of that figure, around 5.16 billion have access to an internet connection. Now out of those people only 2.6 billion are active users on the YouTube platform.
Let’s consider this, if you started making YouTube videos today, you have an existing potential pool of 2.6 billion people to watch your videos. But say those 2.6 billion people are already too preoccupied with other channels they love and couldn’t possibly considering subscribing to a new channel (which is an insane statement but humour me!).
There are still 2.56 billion people on the internet that have the potential to eventually join YouTube to become a new viewer. Not to mention the remaining 2.84 billion that currently don’t have an Internet connection that eventually likely will get one depending on which country they live in and what the situation there is like etc.
Now, let’s focus in a little more on YouTube specific stats. Everyday people watch around one billion hours of content, they have launched local versions in over 100 countries and provide the platform in 80 different languages.
As of 2023…
The number of channels earning six figures per year on the platform has grown 40% year on year.
The number of channels earning five figures per year on the platform has grown 50% year on year.
The number of channels with more than one million subscribers grow by than 65% year on year.
The point I’m trying to make is, the world has a lot of eyeballs, a lot of them at on YouTube and the numbers are only growing and so are your own opportunities on the platform.
I think the numbers speak for themselves, it is not too late to start a Youtube channel, and today is the perfect time to start!
Good luck!
